Weekly World News Update for June 22, 2017

The World Affairs Councils of America's National Office is pleased to share with you Weekly World News Update every Wednesday. An initiative that started in 2012 by the World Affairs Council of Pittsburgh, currently compilied and distributed by the National Office. We bring you thought-provoking pieces from respected global sources on the latest world events.

Council of the Month: World Affairs

WACA congratulates World Affairs (formerly WAC Northern California) for the celebration of its 70th anniversary this June. For the past seven decades, this Council has been converging thought leaders, change makers, and engaged citizens to share ideas and participate in conversations that matter.

The Conversation Starters video series, launched in honor of World Affairs' milestone year, features thought leaders such as Nicholas Kristof, Anne-Marie Slaughter, and Reid Hoffman in examining the history and future of hot-button issues including the futures of democracy, of work, and of global poverty.

This landmark year was commemorated at the World Affairs Awards Dinner and 70th Anniversary Celebration on Wednesday, June 7 at The Fairmont San Francisco. The Celebration highlighted key pivot points in our nation's history and the leaders who made those moments possible, including General William Draper Jr., Hon. George P. Shultz, Dr. Kathryn D. Sullivan, and Dr. Bob Metcalf.

Future of Korea 2017

WACA is pleased to announce that several World Affairs Councils have been selected to receive grant funding for Future of Korea 2017, a program sponsored by the Korea Economic Institute.

KEI, in consultation with the Embassy of the Republic of Korea, the U.S. Department of State, and the World Affairs Councils of America, based its selection on a highly competitive application process. WACA administers the grants for Future of Korea events. For more information on selected Councils and programing, click here.

Thank You, WAC Pittsburgh!

WACA would like to extend gratitude to the World Affairs Council of Pittsburgh for hosting the Council Leadership and WACA Board Meetings in their city June 8-10.

The WACA Board visit to the city and the significance of Councils to Americans' understanding of U.S. foreign policy was not overlooked by local press. Read an editorial covering the visit by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Thank you once again to WACA Board member Sylvia Fields and WAC Pittsburgh CEO Angelica Ocampo and her team for their hospitality and an excellent weekend!
