Call for Nominations to the WACA National Board of Directors

Nominations Due Friday, April 14, 2023

 

The World Affairs Councils of America (WACA) is currently accepting nominations for its FY2024 board of directors. Board members serve a three-year term, starting July 1, and are eligible for re-election to a second three-year term. Nominations must be received by Friday, April 14, 2023.

 

All submitted nominations are reviewed by the nominating committee, and successful candidates are contacted by the committee to be considered for approval by the national network of Councils and the WACA board of directors. The selection of the best candidates is driven by the desire to ensure that the board is composed of diverse, engaged members who bring a range of essential skills and experiences and reflect the organization’s mission and vision.

About the World Affairs Councils of America

The World Affairs Councils of America (WACA) supports, strengthens, and represents a national network of more than 90 apolitical, nonpartisan organizations working to strengthen their communities’ global perspective through speaker programs, discussion groups, and educational experiences. From the founding of our first Council in 1918 to present day, communities around the country have benefited from the perspectives shared by thousands of journalists, professors, thought leaders, and members of the diplomatic corps. WACA’s signature national programming include an annual conference for Council leaders, an academic competition for high school students, and the Engage America speaker series.

Required Qualifications

  • Clear commitment to WACA’s mission to educate, inspire, and engage Americans in world affairs and global issues

  • Demonstrated understanding of the WACA network member organizations’ programs and activities

  • Leadership experience and/or a thorough understanding of the responsibilities of serving on a nonprofit association board

  • Be prepared to make an annual Director financial contribution to WACA (more details below), which includes both board dues and 1918 Society membership

  • Promote WACA in a variety of ways, including making connections and sharing information about the Council network with your own network

  • Be able to commit the time required to serve –  four meetings annually, two in-person, and two virtually.

  • Be willing to commit to a three-year term on the board

  • Uphold a high standard of personal integrity and professional conduct, and be free of significant conflicts of interest which might not allow the proper execution of the duties of a member of the board of directors

 

Who Is Eligible, According to the WACA Bylaws

  • Staff executive or member of the governing body of a Council Member of WACA.These members comprise at least thirty (30) percent of the Board. The Director annual contribution for this type of board member is $1000 in addition to the annual 1918 Society membership contribution of $1000 and dues of that nominee’s Council

  • Individuals who hold responsible positions in the corporate sector whose organizations are willing to become Supporting Members in WACA, formerly the “Corporate” category. This type of Director should contribute annual Supporting Member organizational dues of $10,000 and an additional 1918 Society membership contribution of $1000 per year. Individuals from the nonprofit sector whose organizations are willing to become a Supporting Member can also be considered for this category

  • Individuals who hold responsible positions in the nonprofit sector whose organization complements WACA’s mission. Their organizations should become Affiliate Members in WACA. The annual contribution for this type of Director is $1000 in addition to the Affiliate Member organizational dues of $5000 per year

  • Individuals who are positioned to bring to the WACA and the network as a whole valuable resources, connections, or skills. The annual contribution for this type of Director is $1000 in addition to an annual 1918 Society membership contribution of $1000.

Please email a statement that includes the name, professional affiliation, type of Director position (see eligibility, above), phone number, and email address of the person you wish to nominate. In the statement, please include a brief biography of your nominee as well as what, in your view, qualifies him/her to be a good fit for the WACA national board of directors.

  • You may nominate yourself. Please email a statement that includes your name, professional affiliation, type of Director position (see eligibility, above), phone number, and email address. In the statement, please include a brief biography as well as interests and qualifications that make you a good fit for the WACA national board of directors.
