We support, strengthen, and represent a national network of 90 nonpartisan organizations working to deepen their communities’ global perspective.
Living Locally. Thinking Globally.
World Affairs Councils across the United States create programming and educational initiatives for diverse audiences, fostering a more globally informed electorate, promoting civil discourse, and building community.
World Affairs Councils are independent, community-based organizations that connect people with the ideas, issues, and individuals shaping our world. Through public programs, educational initiatives, and community dialogue, Councils create opportunities for informed engagement on international affairs in cities and regions across the United States. Many Councils offer a mix of public events, programming in schools, service-oriented programs, and offerings for the business community.

One Conversation at a Time.
Engaging the public on foreign affairs and current events fosters a more informed electorate, promotes civil discourse, and builds community through events that bring neighbors, different sides of town, and people of different backgrounds together. At a time of great global complexity and mounting polarization, World Affairs Councils serve as vital bridges between communities, creating thoughtful, inclusive spaces for informed and meaningful discourse.
Our History
Following World War I, communities across the United States established World Affairs Councils to help citizens better understand international events and their local impact. These organizations grew independently while sharing a common belief: informed communities are essential to a healthy democracy.
In 1986, Councils came together to create the World Affairs Councils of America, establishing a national office in Washington, DC, to support collaboration, expand impact, and strengthen the network.
Today, WACA supports a nationwide network of 90 Councils, making it the largest grassroots organization in the United States dedicated to global education and engagement.
